Peaking and Tapering for a Max-Strength Test

October 1, 2026 · 3 min · Free opener

Overview

A taper is a planned cut in training stress before a meet or max test. Fatigue clears faster than strength fades, so a well-timed reduction lets the lifter show strength that fatigue was hiding. This lecture covers a controlled comparison of two taper shapes in powerlifters and a practical taper framework from an evidence-based strength coach.

Step taper vs exponential taper

Sixteen powerlifters ran a 6-week program built to peak the squat, bench press and deadlift.[1] Both groups did a 1-week overreach (a deliberate spike in workload). One group then took a 1-week step taper, an abrupt cut. The other took a 3-week exponential taper, a gradual cut.

  • Performance: both groups raised their squat, bench press, deadlift, total and Wilks score.
  • Muscle: whole-muscle size increased over the block. Growth of fast-twitch type IIA fibers was significant only after the step taper, along with a shift in fiber makeup toward type IIA.
  • Trade-off: some lifters may not have recovered fully in one week after the overreach, particularly for the deadlift and squat jump.
