MOTS-c is a short mitochondrial-derived peptide — encoded in the mitochondrial 12S rRNA region — that your body naturally produces, and the research suggests it helps with metabolic regulation through AMPK pathways — similar to what metformin does.
The practical reality: The human evidence is thin. Most of what we know comes from preclinical studies, and the bodybuilding claims around fat loss and recovery are mostly extrapolation from that early research plus community anecdotes.
Where I've seen it used: I've had contest prep clients use it as a support compound during the final weeks of prep, and some report subjective benefits — better energy during heavy cardio phases, less metabolic fatigue. One client at 13 weeks out from Masters Nationals said it was "clearly giving you something useful" during a demanding prep phase.
The mechanism makes sense: If it's activating AMPK and improving insulin sensitivity like the research suggests, that could help with metabolic efficiency during a caloric deficit. But that's a big "if" when we're talking about research-grade peptides with questionable purity and no established human dosing.
My take: It falls into the category of "potentially useful but not proven." Your fundamentals — training, nutrition, sleep — are going to drive 95% of your results. If you're already dialed in on those and looking for an edge during a cut or prep phase, MOTS-c might be worth considering. But it's not going to make or break your physique.
