Bring Up Your Weak Points, Never Hold Back a Strong One

October 21, 2026 · 10 min · Free opener

Every offseason, someone tells me a body part grows too easily, so they plan to back off it and let the rest of the physique catch up. That is the most common mistake I see in how people handle weak points, and it is the one I would fix first. Bringing up a weak point and holding back a strong one are not two versions of the same idea. Only one of them makes you a better bodybuilder.

We're saying you still try to bring up your worst body parts. You try to bring up lagging body parts, but you never try to hold back a standout body part. Keep the standout body part standing out and bring up the other body parts. Otherwise, all you're doing is bringing down your total quality as a bodybuilder.

1. Never make a body part smaller

A physique is judged as a whole, but it is built one body part at a time. Bringing a strong body part down to match a weak one does not create balance. It lowers the quality of the entire physique. The correct approach is to keep training the strong body parts hard enough to hold them, and to let the rest of the body grow around them.

That's the most important thing people do wrong. You can try to bring up weak points; never hold back a strong point. I see that all the time. People say, my legs grow too much, so I only train them once every two months. Well, yes, so they're going to get smaller. If you brought your entire physique down to the level of your worst body part, we'd all be terrible bodybuilders other than the top five in the world. That's the worst approach, even if it leads to not having great symmetry.
