Peak Week Is Not a Rescue
From Justin's coaching archive — republished as written, not individualized advice.
Opener (informal)
Peak week will not save an out-of-shape physique. If you need the final week to invent conditioning, you were not ready to peak — and there's no magic potion to fix body fat in the final week.
Overview
Contest prep for physique competitions is a two-stage process:
- Stage 1: Get all the body fat off
- Stage 2: Make the fat-free body look pretty.
Stage 2 only works if stage 1 is done properly — and the kicker is… if stage 1 is done properly, you don't even need stage 2. If an athlete is fat on Monday of peak week, no combination of water, sodium, or carbohydrate manipulation will fix it by Saturday.
Peak week isn't magic. Final week isn't about trying to be a magician — it's about prettying up the physique for the stage. If you're chasing more than ~1–2% that week, you weren't ready to peak. You get more engagement on social media or views on YouTube when you make peak week sound magical, but learning the truth has been a hard lesson for many first-time competitors.
In simple terms, if you don't feel ready to step on stage at the start of peak week, you're not going to like the look at the end of peak week.
