Stop the Set When the Bar Slows

Percentages treat every day like the same day. Velocity treats the day you're standing in.

A one-rep max can drift after a few hard sessions. Sleep, stress, and last week's volume all move it. If you load from last month's test and grind every set to the same fixed rep count, you're guessing. Bar speed is what the lift is doing now.

A 2021 systematic review asked what happens when elite athletes train that way.

1. What velocity-based training is doing

Velocity-based training tracks how fast the bar moves, usually with a linear position transducer, and uses that speed to set load, end the set, or give the athlete live feedback.

Three applications show up again and again:

  • Velocity loss. Stop the set when mean velocity falls a set percent from the fastest rep.
  • Velocity zones. Choose a target speed band and adjust the load so each rep stays in that band.
  • Velocity feedback. Show the athlete the number. Intent and accountability go up when the screen is watching.

Percentage-based loading needs a recent 1RM and assumes that number is stable. VBT answers a different question: how fast is this rep, under this fatigue, today.
