Overview
How fast should you lose? Fast enough to hit your conditioning targets on the show timeline, controlled enough to hold onto muscle and keep the machine running. A common default is 0.5–1% of body weight per week — but that's a floor, not a law. The right rate is set by how far you are from stage-ready and how many weeks you have to get there, then scaled to what your recovery, sleep, and training can absorb.[1]
For an enhanced competitor the arithmetic is different from an unassisted dieter: you are sparing muscle pharmacologically, so you can hold a more aggressive deficit for longer without the muscle-loss penalty a natural athlete would pay at the same rate. Set the rate off the calendar and the physique, then let the drop run.[1]
Setting rate off the timeline
Work backward from the show:
- Long runway (16+ weeks out): you can afford the conservative end (~0.5–0.75%/wk) and still land early. Bank the buffer so peak week isn't a scramble.
- Behind schedule / short runway: the rate climbs. A larger deficit is the correct tool when the timeline demands it — you accept faster loss on purpose, and lean harder on the muscle-sparing that enhanced status buys you.
- On track: hold the rate that's keeping the drop linear against your check-ins and stage targets.
