Diet-level cardio and added food don't mix. A preview of the Troponin University lecture on pulling cardio back after a long diet so food goes where it should.

Why Cardio Should Come Down After a Long Diet

Maybe you logged hour after hour on the stairs or the bike just to keep the scale dropping. If so, this one is going to feel strange. When the diet ends and food comes back in, the cardio has to come down too.

That's the point of the Troponin University lecture on pulling cardio back after a long diet. Once fat loss stops being the priority, the cardio volume that got you there starts working against you.

One note up front. This is about the phase after the diet ends. In the middle of prep, you run the cardio your plan calls for.

Cardio had one job

During a diet, cardio is there for one reason. When food can't go any lower, it burns extra energy so the deficit keeps growing.

When the diet is over, that job is done.

Run the same amount of cardio while you eat more, and you're trying to fill a leaky bucket. The extra food is supposed to refill your muscles, help your hormones bounce back and make your training better. Instead a big chunk of it gets burned off by more cardio.

Why it has to drop

The free part of the lecture gives four reasons heavy cardio goes from useful to harmful once the diet is over. In short:

  • Your body won't leave survival mode until the stress backs off.
  • The energy you eat needs to go into rebuilding, not into one more session.
  • Your hormones need a small surplus to come back up, and extra cardio eats it.
  • Better sleep follows when you're not worn down, and sleep does most of the work of hormone recovery.

This phase is a setup, not a pause

Coming off a diet isn't just about getting back to normal. The food going back in is supposed to fuel better training and new muscle. If your goal is size, the post-diet rebound is for GROWING, and diet-level cardio cuts straight into that.

The companion lecture on the rebound and the hold covers the growth side. Read The Rebound and the Path to 'Second Bodybuilding'.

What the full lecture covers

The free opener explains why cardio has to come down. The full lecture covers:

  • Why lifting stays, but with a different mindset
  • How to think about training volume now
  • How much to drop cardio
  • What training is for during this phase
